| 内容简介（英文） | T’ao Yuan-ming Appreciating Chrysanthemums Wang Chao (fl. ca. 15th-16th c.) Ming Dynasty Wang Chao (style names Te-ch’u and K’o-chung), a native of Hsiu-ning in Kiangsu, excelled at painting and worked in a style between that of Tai Chin (1388-1462) and Wu Wei (1459-1508). He described his brushwork as “wavy clouds (hai-yun)”, a term he also took as his own self-styled sobriquet. This work, donated by Mr. Lin Tsung-i, shows an old man under a tree, gazing at a pot of chrysanthemums held by an attendant—an allusion to the theme of the early recluse-poet T’ao Yuan-ming (365-427) and his love of this flower. The figures are rendered in coarse and untrammeled brushwork, the drapery lines being animated and straightforward. The abbreviated landscape is also done in rich, moist ink. |
